Wallpaper Installation

Wallpaper Installation & Removal in Ontario

Wallpaper is unforgiving in a way paint is not. A seam that is a millimetre open, a pattern that drifts across a wall, or a bubble that dries in place is permanent and obvious. Getting it right depends almost entirely on the wall underneath being flat, sealed and correctly sized before the first drop goes up.

BrightLook Paintings Inc prepares walls to a paper-ready standard first: old covering removed properly rather than torn, adhesive residue washed off, damage patched and sanded, then a primer or sizing appropriate to the paper type applied so the paper both bonds now and comes off cleanly in future.

We hang traditional pasted papers, pre-pasted, non-woven paste-the-wall, vinyl, grasscloth and large-format murals. Each behaves differently on the wall, and pattern repeat, drop match and roll sequencing get planned before cutting rather than discovered halfway across the room.

  • Grasscloth, vinyl, non-woven and traditional pasted papers

How We Do It

  1. 01

    Survey and quantity

We measure the walls, check the pattern repeat and drop match, and calculate roll quantity with the correct waste allowance before ordering.

  2. 02

    Remove and clean

Existing covering is steamed or scored and removed in full, then all adhesive residue is washed off so the new paper is not bonding to old glue.

  3. 03

    Prepare the wall

Damage is patched, walls are sanded and, where the surface is uneven or heavily textured, skim coated flat.

  4. 04

    Prime and size

A wallpaper primer or sizing is applied so the paper bonds evenly, slides into position while hanging, and releases cleanly years later.

  5. 05

    Hang and match

Drops are plumbed, hung in sequence, pattern-matched at every seam, rolled, and trimmed tight at ceiling, baseboard and openings.

What It Costs

Typical wallpaper installation cost in Ontario

$4 – $10 per sq ft

Installation is priced on wall area, pattern complexity and paper type — grasscloth and large-repeat murals take considerably longer to hang than a plain non-woven. Removal of existing wallpaper is quoted separately because layer count is only known once we start.

Wallpaper Installation — Common Questions

How much does wallpaper installation cost in Ontario?

+

Installation typically runs $4 to $10 per square foot of wall area, excluding the wallpaper itself. Pattern complexity is the main driver — a large-repeat mural or grasscloth takes far longer to hang and match than a plain non-woven paper.

Can you remove old wallpaper before hanging new paper?

+

Yes, and you should never hang new paper over old. We steam or score and strip the existing covering, wash off all adhesive residue, then patch and prime the wall. Hanging over old paper causes bubbling and makes future removal far worse.

Do I need to prime the wall before wallpapering?

+

Yes. A wallpaper primer or sizing gives the paper an even surface to bond to, lets it slide into position while you are matching the pattern, and means it releases cleanly when it is eventually removed rather than tearing the drywall face off.

Can you hang wallpaper on a textured wall?

+

Not directly — texture telegraphs straight through the paper. The wall needs to be skim coated flat and sanded first. We quote that as part of the preparation when we survey the room.
