Deck & Fence Staining
Deck & Fence Staining in Ontario
Untreated exterior wood in Ontario has a short life. UV breaks down the surface fibres, water gets into the grain, and the freeze-thaw cycle splits it open from the inside. A deck that goes two or three seasons without a coating is usually already grey and checked before anyone thinks about staining it.
Restoring that wood is not just a matter of brushing stain over it. BrightLook Paintings Inc washes, strips old failing coating where present, neutralises and brightens the wood to bring the pH back and restore colour, then sands the raised grain flat before any stain touches it. Stain applied over grey, un-brightened wood looks muddy and fails early.
We work with both penetrating semi-transparent stains and solid-colour stains. Penetrating stains show the grain and wear gradually rather than peeling; solid stains cover further-gone wood but need more prep at recoat. We will tell you honestly which one your deck is a candidate for.
What's Included

- Wood brightening to neutralise and restore natural colour
- Sanding of raised grain and rough boards
- Popped nail and loose board fastening
- Penetrating semi-transparent or solid-colour stain application
- Decks, fences, pergolas, railings, gates and garden structures
How We Do It
- 01
Assess the wood
We check moisture content, existing coating type and board condition — stain will not penetrate wood that is still wet or still sealed.
- 02
Clean and strip
Dirt, mildew and failing coating are removed so the new stain is bonding to wood rather than to whatever failed last time.
- 03
Brighten and neutralise
A brightener restores the wood's pH after cleaning and pulls back the natural colour from grey, weathered fibre.
- 04
Sand smooth
Raised grain and rough boards are sanded flat so the finish is even and the surface is comfortable underfoot.
- 05
Stain and seal
Stain is applied at the correct moisture window and worked into the grain, with end grain and cut edges given extra attention.
What It Costs
Typical deck staining cost in Ontario
$3 – $7 per sq ft
Restoration work drives the range far more than the stain does. A deck needing full strip, brighten and sand costs considerably more than a maintenance recoat on a deck that was stained two years ago. Fences are quoted per linear foot and per side.
Deck & Fence Staining — Common Questions
How often should a deck be re-stained in Ontario?
+
Every two to three years for horizontal surfaces like deck boards and stair treads, which take the full UV and water load. Vertical surfaces such as fences and railings often hold four to five years. Recoating on schedule is far cheaper than a full restoration after the coating has failed.
Can you stain a deck that has gone grey?
+
Yes. Grey is weathered surface fibre, not permanent damage. We clean, strip any remaining coating, apply a wood brightener to restore the pH and colour, then sand the raised grain. Skipping the brightening step is why stain over grey wood usually looks muddy.
What is the best time of year to stain a deck?
+
Late spring through early fall, with a dry window on either side of the work. The wood needs to be genuinely dry through, not just dry on top — usually two to three rain-free days after washing — and overnight temperatures need to stay within the product's range.
Should I use a solid or semi-transparent stain?
+
Semi-transparent stains penetrate, show the grain and wear back gradually rather than peeling, so they are easier to maintain. Solid stains hide further-gone wood and last longer on vertical surfaces, but they sit on the surface and need more prep when it is time to recoat.
