Professional Deck & Fence Staining in the GTA

GTA winters break wood down fast — UV dries it out, freeze-thaw splits it, and two seasons without a coating is usually enough to turn a deck grey. We wash, brighten, sand and stain it back, rather than brushing colour over tired wood.

What deck and fence staining includes

Untreated wood doesn’t last long around here. UV breaks down the surface fibres, water works its way into the grain, and the freeze-thaw cycle splits it open from the inside. A deck left two or three seasons without a coating is usually already grey and checked before anyone gets around to staining it.

Restoring that wood takes more than a brush and a can of stain. We wash it, strip any old coating that’s failing, apply a brightener to bring the pH and colour back, then sand the raised grain flat. Stain applied straight over grey, un-brightened wood is what causes that muddy, blotchy look people associate with a bad restain.

We work with both semi-transparent and solid stains. Semi-transparent shows the grain and wears back gradually instead of peeling; solid covers wood that’s further gone but needs more prep at the next recoat. We’ll tell you honestly which one fits the condition your deck or fence is actually in.

Our deck and fence staining process

Four stages, from the first walkthrough to a stained, sealed surface.

Assessment & quote

We check moisture content, existing coating and board condition, then give you a fixed written price — stain won't hold on wood that's still wet or still sealed.

Wash & strip

Dirt, mildew and any failing old coating are removed, so the new stain bonds to wood rather than to whatever failed last time.

Brighten & sand

A brightener restores the wood's natural colour and pH after cleaning, then raised grain and rough boards are sanded flat and even.

Stain & seal

Stain goes on within the correct moisture window and is worked into the grain, with extra attention on end grain and cut edges.

Why GTA homeowners choose us for deck and fence staining

Wood that’s already grey doesn’t need a new coat of colour first — it needs the steps below before the stain goes anywhere near it.

We brighten grey wood first

Colour and pH restored before staining, so the finish isn't muddy or blotchy.

Honest about solid vs semi-transparent

We tell you which stain type actually fits your wood's condition, not the one that's easiest to sell.

Popped nails & loose boards fixed

Fastening done before staining, not left for you to deal with afterward.

We check moisture, not just the calendar

Stain goes on when the wood is actually dry through, not just dry on the surface.

Fixed price, written upfront

Restoration scope is priced before we start — not adjusted once the job is underway.

Fences quoted per linear foot

No guessing on the invoice — fences are priced per linear foot and per side, in writing.

Brightlook exceeded our expectations when they did our kitchen roof painting. They were professional, did an excellent prep work on paint quality to use and covered necessary areas to protect items. The final work was highly impressive and extra paint was returned to us. We would not hesitate to use Brightlook again and also recommend them for any paint job.

Common Questions About Deck & Fence Staining

Wood condition varies a lot from deck to deck — call and we’ll talk through what your specific wood needs.
Every two to three years for deck boards and stair treads, which take the full UV and water load. Vertical surfaces like fences and railings often hold four to five years. Recoating on schedule is far cheaper than a full restoration later.
Yes. Grey is weathered surface fibre, not permanent damage. We clean, strip any remaining coating, brighten the wood to restore the pH and colour, then sand the raised grain. Skipping the brightening step is why stain over grey wood looks muddy.
Late spring through early fall, with a dry stretch on either side of the work. The wood needs to be genuinely dry through — usually two to three rain-free days after washing — and overnight temperatures need to stay in range for the product.
Semi-transparent stains show the grain and wear back gradually instead of peeling, which makes maintenance easier. Solid stains hide further-gone wood and last longer on vertical surfaces but need more prep at the next recoat.
Usually 24 to 48 hours for foot traffic, though full cure for furniture and heavy use can take a bit longer. We'll give you exact timing based on the stain product and weather on the day.

Yes — small retail units, offices and multi-unit buildings, usually scheduled outside business hours so the exterior work doesn't disrupt your operation.
